The Institute of Electrical Power Engineering

The institute hosts a broad range of research teams with internationally recognized activities and outputs. The major themes include: generation, transmission, distribution and use of electricity. We also provide an expertise in the areas of distributed generation, the quality of electricity management, electromagnetic compatibility, electrical transport systems, high voltage technology and electric lighting.

The institute has close links with other research institutions and industries, in Poland and internationally. The research is highly interdisciplinary with many collaborations with partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany and UK and it includes the following projects: Network of DER Laboratories and Pre-Standardization (DER-Lab), Distributed Energy Resources Research Infrastructure (DERRI), Market Access for Smaller Size Intelligent Electricity Generation in Intelligent Energy Europe program.

We can also boast about the bilateral agreements with the State Technical University in Mariupol, Ukraine and the State University in Blagowieszczensk, Russia. Additionally, professor Maciej Pawlik, a recognized member of our academic staff, was awarded a title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the State University in Blagowieszczensk, whereas professor Władysław Mielczarski is the only Polish representative in the European Energy Institute.

Furthermore, the institute takes an active part in numerous research projects subsidized by the Polish Ministry of Higher Education, The National Science Centre, The National Centre for Research and Development such as Advanced Electricity Generation Technologies to name but a few. Moreover, we are an active member of CETRANS (The Centre of Railway Transport), which cooperates with the city authorities in educating future engineers to work at Lodz Agglomeration Railway and Fast Speed Railway.

Our academic staff hosts national and international conferences, e.g. IEEE Electrical Power Quality and Utilization which so far have taken place in Cracow, Lodz, Barcelona, and Lisbon .

The institute also houses the distributed generation laboratory equipped with such devices as: a gas micro-turbine, stationary  photovoltaic systems, a wind turbine, a fuel cell, an electrochemical energy storage, etc.

Since 2000 we also have run a lighting and electro technical equipment research laboratory which is accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation as well as other laboratories such as: a high voltage laboratory, a digital electrical power system protection laboratory, an electromagnetic compatibility laboratory, an electrical transport laboratory or a power station laboratory,

We offer a wealth of different options, including multiple levels of courses to suit different student requirements, such as BSc, MSc, PhD courses for on campus  and remote students. Students can also apply for work placement. Additionally, study abroad program is available with our Russian and Ukrainian partners.
