THE DEPARTMENT OF MICROELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

 

Research areas at the department include: microelectronics; microsystems; embedded systems; mobile systems; real time systems; modeling and simulation of semiconductor devices, smart power and high power systems as well as electric circuits and systems; industrial electronics; thermography; photovoltaic systems; the analysis of biomedical signals and images; internet technologies and the application of IT in medicine and industry.

 

 The department has performed over 60 research projects formulated and submitted for founding to the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN) and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MNiSW) as well as 16 international projects. Currently, we carry  out 11 international grants, 3 international development projects and numerous projects in cooperation with renowned national and international research centers.

 

In particular we are heavily involved in driving the agendas behind several fields:

  • Computer methods in music and the analysis of a musical work from the angle of automatic melody harmonization
  • Failure detection in underground power cables (HPFF) with the use of artificial intelligence
  • The analysis of microscopic images of tissues
  • Algorithms of stochastic optimization
  • Operating system architecture
  • Operating systems for the mobile platforms
  • Digital circuits with optimized architecture in iris recognition systems
  • Distributed data acquisition, processing and transmission systems to operate a high energy particle accelerator
  • Modeling and programming of semiconductor devices and integrated electronics

 

 

The project Distributed systems and biologically inspired systems constitutes an integral part of the European project PERPLEXUS which aims to develop a network of specialized data processing units which supports complex simulations carried out in various areas of science and technology.

 

The department has established a long-term cooperation with DESY, Hamburg, Germany  in developing electronic apparatus for the accelerator control systems. We are also a member of Tesla Technology Collaboration, which develops the technology of accelerator constructions. Furthermore, we cooperate with ITER, Cadarache, France in control and monitoring systems for plasma reactors used in research on problems with the practical application of nuclear fusion in power engineering.

 

We are also proud to have been hosting for 19 years an international conference MIXDES (Mixed Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems). Since 2010 we have been publishing a quarterly magazine entitled International Journal of Microelectronics and Computer Science.

 

We have been awarded over 200 medals at international exhibitions of inventions and innovations, including 30 awards given by the Minister of Science and Higher Education, The Minister of Science and Digitization and the President of the Committee for Scientific Research. We are also a proud owner of six Łódzkie Eureka statuettes and six of our doctoral dissertations in the field of electronics were awarded by the Prime Minister’s awards for excellence.

 

The department also houses numerous research laboratories, e.g., a computer thermography laboratory, instruments and power systems laboratory, control systems for high-energy physics laboratory, a biometric technologies laboratory and a solar energy laboratory.

 

Our academic staff lectures not only at our department but also at the International Faculty of Engineering in French and English.  We also offer elective undergraduate courses in the field of electronics and telecommunications, IT, and Internet technologies.
