THE DEPARTMENT OF SEMICONDUCTOR AND OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES

 

 

The main fields of research conducted at the Department of Semiconductors and Optoelectronic Devices cover designing and manufacturing of integrated electronics and silicon and siliconcarbide-based semiconductor devices; high temperature electronics; thermal issues in electronics, photovoltaics and integrated optoelectronic systems.

Numerous doctoral, individual, targeted or commissioned national and international projects in the field of microelectronics and optoelectronics are carried out at the department. Among them you will find projects founded and co-funded by the European Union as well as the projects based on the bilateral agreements with partner universities in Belgium, France, Germany and Ukraine or with the industry partners such as STMicroelectronics, OSRAM, Curamik, LAMINA. Moreover, we host a biennial international conference Microtherm which is highly recognised among the researchers from all over the world.

The department’s research record is highly impressive and includes numerous patents.Among our major achievements you will find creating the effective technology of PIN diode production based on silicon carbide (SIC) and new forms of housings integrated with micro-channel cooling structures for power semiconductor diodes button cells. Demonstrator bipolar pin diodes in the substrate of SIC was awarded a silver medal at IV International Warsaw Invention Show in 2010.

 

The department offers a rich technological base including the Educational Centre of Microtechnology which consists of five laboratories, one of which has „a clean room” standard. The laboratory equipment includes: stations  for high-temperature processes in silicon carbide (SIC) with temperature reaching above 2000 C, vacuum research positions (PVD), electron guns, magnetron, stepper and RTP as well as positions for plasma etching and deposition.

Scientific research and tutorials in the field of optoelectronics take place in the fiber-optics laboratory under the auspices of the Corning Cable Systems Company Poland. This laboratory is equipped with  stations to research the structure of fiber-optic network, the structure of optical track and its particular elements.

In 2010 the Apple Authorized Training Centre for Education was established at the department – the only university institution of that kind – collaborating with Apple Inc. Additionally, the departments undertakes collaborative projects with Altium Europe Gmbh company which supports the Altium Laboratory where tutorials are based on Altium Designer software.
